LINKEDIN PROFILE

Whether you are looking to create a wandering garden trail or a statement entrance to your front door, Sandstone Stepping Stones offer a warmth and texture that manufactured concrete simply cannot replicate.

The beauty of these stones lies in their rich golden sandy tones and their incredible versatility. From stepping through a lush fernery to creating a dedicated firepit entertaining area, sandstone provides a natural, high-end finish that feels right at home in the Australian landscape.

Choose Your Aesthetic: Organic vs. Flagstone

Every garden has a different personality, which is why we offer two distinct styles of sandstone steps to suit your design vision:

  • The “Organic” Look: If you want a soft, whimsical feel, the Sandstone Stepping Stones Organic are the perfect choice. These feature natural curved edges and rounded shapes that look as if they’ve been part of your garden for decades.
  • The “Flagstone” Look: For a slightly more structured but still rustic appearance, our Traditional Sandstone Stepping Stones offer a varying sized flagstone aesthetic. These have natural, hand-split edges that provide a rugged, earthy charm.

Built for the Australian Elements

Not all sandstone is created equal. While many Australian sandstones are porous and prone to erosion, our selection is specifically chosen for its density and durability:

  1. Salt-Attack Resistant: Unlike most varieties, this stone is hardy enough to be used near salt-chlorinated pools or in coastal environments without deteriorating.
  2. Certified Safety: With a P5 non-slip rating, these stones provide maximum grip underfoot, making them the safest choice for wet garden paths or pool surrounds.
  3. Perfect Thickness: At approximately 22mm thick, these stones offer the ideal balance of strength and manageability for handling during installation.

The “Master Mason” DIY Installation Tip

You don’t need a professional crew to achieve a professional result. Both styles are designed for easy DIY installation. For the best longevity, we recommend laying them on a crushed rock base into a wet mix of sand and cement. This ensures a stable, level path that won’t shift over time.

Complete the Look

If you are planning a larger project, we also stock matching pool pavers and pool coping. This allows you to carry those beautiful golden tones from your garden paths right up to the water’s edge for a seamless, architectural finish.

🛠️ DIY Guide: How to Lay Sandstone Stepping Stones

Installing these stones is a straightforward afternoon project. By using a wet-mix method over a solid base, you prevent the stones from “rocking” or sinking into the soil.

What You’ll Need:

  • Sandstone Stepping Stones (Organic or Flagstone)
  • Crushed Rock (Road base or 20mm rubble)
  • Paving Sand and Cement (3:1 ratio for the wet mix)
  • Rubber Mallet & Spirit Level

The 5-Step Installation Process:

  1. Mark Your Stride: Lay the stones out on the grass first. Walk the path naturally and adjust the spacing so you aren’t “hopping” between stones. Tip: Aim for a distance of 60cm–65cm from the center of one stone to the next.
  2. Dig the Footprints: Trace around each stone with a spade and dig out the soil to a depth of about 100mm. This allows room for your base and the stone’s thickness.
  3. Prepare the Base: Fill the bottom 50mm with crushed rock and compact it down firmly. This provides the drainage and stability needed to prevent sinking.
  4. The Wet-Mix Bed: Mix your sand and cement with enough water to create a “doughy” consistency. Place a 30mm–40mm layer of this mix on top of your crushed rock.
  5. Set the Stone: Press the sandstone into the wet mix. Use your rubber mallet to tap it down until it’s level. Use a spirit level to ensure the stone has a very slight “fall” away from your house to help with water runoff.

Pro Maintenance Tip:

Because our sandstone is salt-attack resistant and boasts a P5 non-slip rating, it’s incredibly hardy. However, we always recommend applying a high-quality penetrating sealer after installation. This preserves those “golden sandy tones” and makes it much easier to wash off any dirt or red wine spills!
