LINKEDIN PROFILE

Lets not only explain the variuos grades and quality of travertine tiles and pavers, lets give them a score from 1-10 as well.

Before buying travertine tiles or pavers, it is worth learning the language of stone grading. In the same way that timber, marble or engineered flooring comes in different quality levels, travertine is also sorted into grades based on appearance, consistency, surface quality and overall selection.

For many Australian homeowners, standard grade travertine offers the best balance of performance and value. But it is not the only option. From ultra premium through to commercial or rustica grade, each category has its place.

You can view available options on our main travertine tiles and pavers page.

Why travertine grading matters

Travertine is a natural stone. That means variation is part of its appeal. Colour movement, veining, small holes and tonal shifts are all features of the material.

However, not all variation is equal. Higher grades are more carefully selected for consistency, surface quality and appearance. Lower grades may include more holes, stronger colour variation, chipped edges, surface inconsistencies or less refined sorting.

The grade you choose can affect the finished look, installation process, long-term maintenance and overall value of the project.

Ultra Premium Grade

Ultra premium grade is the highest level of selection available in travertine tiles and pavers.

This grade is chosen for its refined colour tones and highly consistent appearance. Natural variation is still present, as it should be with real stone, but it is more controlled and subtle.

Ultra premium travertine is hand-selected to achieve a virtually hole-free surface. This creates a cleaner, more flawless presentation that suits architectural homes, luxury pool areas, premium courtyards and interiors where consistency is essential.

The edges are usually subtly tumbled, giving the stone a natural softness while preserving the corners and overall shape.

After installation, the stone should be sealed with a quality penetrating sealer to protect the finish and preserve its appearance.

Premium Grade

Premium grade travertine offers a high level of selection, with strong colour consistency and a more refined surface than lower grades.

This grade typically includes a broad selection of attractive colours, although some grey or black markings may appear in the surface. The tiles are chosen for consistent colour and honing, which makes them suitable for homeowners who want a polished natural stone result without moving into the very highest price category.

Premium grade travertine should not include large holes running through the tile from top to bottom. The tumbled edges are generally smooth, and the corners tend to remain more intact.

This grade is well suited to pool surrounds, alfresco areas, internal flooring and outdoor entertaining zones where presentation is important.

“A” Grade

A grade travertine is a strong option for homeowners who want quality, consistency and value in one package.

It usually offers a wide selection of colours, with minimal grey or black markings. The tiles are selected to achieve reasonably consistent colour throughout each batch, giving the finished project a cohesive look.

Some minor holes are permitted in A grade travertine. In many cases, these holes can be filled during the grouting process using colour-matched travertine grout, making them less noticeable in the finished installation.

Tumbled edges are generally smooth, although small parts of corners may occasionally be missing due to the tumbling process. This is part of the natural character of the product rather than necessarily a defect.

A grade travertine is a practical choice for family homes, patios, courtyards and pool areas where quality and value both matter.

Standard Grade (the most popular choice)

Standard grade is the most popular travertine grade in Australia, largely because it provides a strong balance between performance and value.

This grade still offers good colour selection and overall consistency, though it may include more grey or black markings than A grade or premium grade. Some striations, swirls and natural colour movement should be expected.

Standard grade travertine may include some larger holes. Rarely, some holes may be filled through the full thickness of the tile. During installation, holes are often filled with grout, which helps create a more complete finished surface.

The tumbled edges are generally smooth, although small chips or missing corner sections may occur as a result of the tumbling process.

For many Melbourne homes, standard grade travertine is the sensible middle ground. It delivers the natural stone look people want without pushing the budget unnecessarily high.

Commercial Grade or Rustica Grade

Commercial grade, sometimes called rustica grade or budget grade, is the lowest of the commonly discussed travertine grades.

This grade allows larger colour variations, including grey or black markings. Small to large unfilled holes may be present, along with defects in sizing, honing or edge quality.

Tiles in this grade may not be filled and may require more extensive grouting during installation. Some holes may run from the surface to the bottom of the tile. Edges may be cracked, broken or less consistent, and the tiles may arrive without the same level of colour sorting.

Rustica grade can suit certain projects where an aged, rustic or highly weathered look is desired. However, it is generally not recommended for homeowners seeking a clean, consistent finish.

Which travertine grade should you choose?

For most Australian homeowners, standard grade or A grade will be the most practical choice. They offer strong performance, good appearance and reliable value.

Premium and ultra premium grades are better suited to projects where colour consistency and surface quality are critical. These may include luxury homes, architectural builds, high-end pool surrounds and formal entertaining spaces.

Rustica grade should be approached carefully. It may be suitable for certain rustic landscaping projects, but it is not the right choice for every home.

Consider grade and finish together

Grade is only one part of the selection process. The surface finish is just as important.

A premium grade stone in the wrong finish may not suit the project. Likewise, a standard grade tumbled travertine may be ideal for a relaxed pool area or alfresco zone.

For more on finishes such as fine honed, honed unfilled, honed unfilled tumbled and natural sawn, see travertine surface finishes.

Final word from Melbourne

Travertine grading is not just industry jargon. It is a useful way to understand what you are buying and how the finished project is likely to look.

The best choice is not always the highest grade. It is the grade that suits your budget, your expectations and the area where the stone will be installed.

For most homes, standard grade travertine remains popular for good reason: it performs well, looks natural and offers excellent value. Explore the full range of travertine tiles and pavers before making your final selection.
