Meet Glenn Russell – Master Stonemason & Founder

What happens when a computer scientist trades in his keyboard for a trowel? You get Glenn Russell — a true craftsman, visionary, and the man behind Stone & Slate Discounts.

Born and raised in Melbourne, Glenn originally followed a path in Computer Science, landing a career in IT. But a promotion in 1982 took him to Sydney, where life had a different plan. Glenn spent increasing time with his uncles, pioneers of the stone industry in NSW, who at their peak ran over 10 natural stone stores across NSW and the ACT. It was here that Glenn rediscovered his roots — and fell in love with the trade.

Within a year, Glenn made a life-changing decision: he resigned from his computer admin role to begin his real education — in the art of natural stone tiling. He worked 6 days a week as a tiler and then — get this — opened one of his uncle’s stores every Sunday, trialling Sunday trading in Western Sydney before it was even a thing. This bold move gave Glenn the hands-on experience, business grit, and confidence to chase something bigger.

Building from the Ground Up (Literally)

After four intense years, Glenn returned home to Melbourne. In a little side street off the Princes Highway in Doveton — Lace Street — he set up a small showroom and warehouse. His wife Shona, who’s been by his side since day one (they married in 1986), ran the business while Glenn was out laying stone. And when we say she “ran the business,” we mean driving the forklift, loading trucks, and helping customers firsthand.

By 1988, Glenn moved full-time into the warehouse and showroom, still cutting, bullnosing, and prepping stone, while Shona focused on managing the front-end and customers. Together, they laid the foundation — literally and figuratively — for what would soon become an empire.

Where We Are Today

What started as a two-person show in a Doveton back street is now Australia’s most trusted and largest supplier of natural stone pavers and tiles. We currently import and distribute over 600 FCLs (Full Container Loads) or approx 480,00m2 of stone pavers and stone outdoor tiles annually.

We proudly deal direct with quarries both locally and overseas. With shares in overseas factories, we choose our own raw blocks for processing — ensuring premium quality at the best prices. Because of this unique supply chain model, we confidently offer the lowest prices on bluestone and other natural stones in Australia.
