What are cobblestones?

Cobblestones are little sqaure pavers which are commonly used for high grip outdoor paving. Usually, they are used for drive way pavers and paths. They may be small but they are dense. This means they can withstand a lot of pressure from contant traffic and heavy vehicles.

Cobblestones are strong and versatile for many applications such as garden edging, garden paths, paving accents, firepit pavers and most commonly, driveway pavers. This is because they are extremely dense with great grip which makes our cobblestones perfect for high traffic. So, if you have a steep driveway, cobblestones are a safe and ideal drive way paving solution.

Due to their small size, cobblestones make paving curved edges and detailing easy. Also, most of our cobbles have matching pavers and tiles if you want to continue the look and feel throughout your indoor or outdoor tiling.

What are Cobblestones?

Cobblestone is a centuries-old natural stone. Earlier, people used cobblestones for constructing buildings, roads, streets, and exteriors. Even today, cobblestone is considered an elegant option for exterior paving applications. In the past few centuries, contractors used cobblestone to pave the driveways that led people to the mansions and monuments. This authentic natural stone is made of small natural stones that have smooth edges. The material is mainly used to create sturdy and smooth driveways. Cobblestone has the ability to give your space a natural and authentic finish. It is one of the visually appealing natural paving materials. Usually, manufacturers design cobblestone from travertine, granite, sandstone, limestone, and other natural stones.

Now that cobblestone is a combination of sturdy natural stones, it goes without saying that the cobbles installed on your driveways are weather-resistant, fire-proof, and moisture-proof. They are designed to last a lifetime. The timeless beauty and the visual appeal of this natural stone in matchless. No natural stone or artificial paving material could beat cobblestone in terms of visual appeal and natural character. It looks stunning in both traditional and modern homes. You could even use cobblestone to design a mid-century home. Besides that, cobblestone has various applications. You can create a pathway that takes your guests to the front entrance door or use it as a pool coping material. There are many ways you can incorporate the classical beauty of cobblestone into your modern landscape.

Durability and Versatile of Cobblestone Pavers

Cobblestone can be installed either on the compacted sand layer or laid on the mortar. One of the major benefits of cobblestone pavers is its durability. The roads paved with these small natural stones can last for years. The weather-resistant quality of cobblestone makes it an ideal option for all kinds of paving applications. The material does not get slippery and muddy in monsoon. Similarly, it does not get dusty and dirty in dry weather.

Cobblestone is especially famous for its weather-proof qualities. You could use this natural stone just about anywhere you want – be it interior flooring or exterior wall cladding and pool coping. One major disadvantage of cobblestone is the high cost. Cobblestone is probably the most expensive natural paving material in the Australian stone market. Besides that, the vehicles tend to make a lot of noise when they are driven on the cobblestone pavers. However, its durability and weather-resistant property compensate for all its drawbacks.

Applications of Cobblestone Pavers

In modern-day architecture, cobblestone is extensively used for building and construction purposes. They can be found in the European and Australian streets. The beautiful hues and unique patterns of cobblestone add depth and warmth to the roads. They also make the roads visually appealing. Cobblestones are rounded and small blocks of pavers.

Cobblestone must not be confused with concrete pavers and other artificial paving materials. For example, porcelain might resemble this natural stone, but that doesn’t mean it has the properties of the true cobblestone tiles. With that being said, you must choose authentic cobblestone that is made of limestone, sandstone, basalt, travertine, granite, and more. Nowadays, the Belgian blocks that feature any natural stone are referred to as the cobblestone. This type of cobblestone pavers is used to achieve a uniform and regular pattern. Basically, the homeowners arrange a bunch of uniform natural stones for a minimalist and sleek look.

You must have seen the granite and travertine cobblestones being used in the pathways, driveways, and roads. In fact, many cobblestone paved roads that were constructed centuries ago in Melbourne are still in service. There is no denying that cobblestone is your ultimate option for exteriors. It blends with all types of surroundings efficiently. The material is used to create a natural and old-world charm. Cobblestone tiles can be used to add elegance to your home. It can also enhance the property’s curb appeal.

Cobble Stones / Cobblestones Maintenance and Replacement
Maintenance isn’t going to be a concern with the cobblestone pavers. You only need to wash the surface regularly to keep it looking gorgeous. Make sure you remove the grass that grows between the joints. You can fill the gaps between the cobblestone pavers with natural elements or crushed stones. Do you know the cobblestone driveway that is maintained and sealed properly has the potential to last for as long as a century? If you notice the signs of scratches and cracks, then it is probably the base that fails. If that happens, you can replace the base materials and re-install the same stones. Cobblestone is strong enough to endure heavy foot traffic, vehicular traffic, and stains.

Cobblestone was considered as the principal tiling material in the historical construction industry. Even today, the material is used in vintage architecture. You could also find the pavers that mimic the aesthetics of cobblestone. They are available at a reasonable price, but they might not last for years. Sealing is required after the cobblestone pavers are laid. You need to wash the surface and remove all the debris to prepare it for sealing. Spray sealant is available at the local grocery stores.

All you need to know about Cobblestones
Cobblestone can be defined as a natural building material that is based on stones representing cobbles. In most parts of the world, cobblestone is popularly used for pavement of roads & streets and also for some parts of buildings. Belgian Blocks or Setts are mostly casually referred to as “cobbles.” However, there is a difference between the two –while Setts serve to be a distinct type of cobblestones that are shaped or quarried in proper sizes or forms, cobblestones are naturally occurring and are less uniform in the overall size.

What are Cobbles and How do They Originate?
Cobbles can be referred to as stones that were utilized during the earlier era for the pavement of roads and streets. The term “cob” is referred to as a lump that is known to describe the cobblestone in the best manner. Cobbles can be referred to as large-sized pebbles that are mostly rounded with the help of flowing water.

Cobblestones are easily found across the bed of streams wherein they have gathered. While most cobblestones are quarried and given a proper shape, the cobblestone gets formed naturally. The stones usually feature a dimension of 2.5 to 10 inches.

Enhancing the beauty of the streets of some of the most historic towns in the world, cobblestone are some of the most renowned & recognizable stones that are utilized in the concept of hardscaping. These are usually quarried from the river beds or beds of streams wherein the constant flow of running water tends to wear the stone away and form the respective signature rounded stones.

How is Cobblestones Extracted?
Cobblestones are known to represent one of the most effective options for exterior spaces as they require minimal processing while delivering impressive aesthetics at the same time. Pebbles of cobblestones can be further softened as well as shaped for creating the desired form –whether you are looking forward to using the same on pathways, driveways, or streets. This makes cobblestones an ideal choice for paving any given area with great aesthetics & functionality.

As these are naturally found along the river or stream beds, cobblestones are extracted from the alluvial deposits of the rivers or streams. Furthermore, they might receive specific processing to achieve the desired shape, form, or even patterns. Stones that are naturally smoothed by the stream or river flow can be utilized for adding a finishing touch to the driveways or pavements –especially when coupled with brick borders and inset stones.

Some of the common varieties of cobblestones that you can find out there are:

• Sawed: Available in the natural appearance with mixed colors. The sawed variety of cobblestones can be supplied with natural or sawn surfaces.

• Natural Split: These are available with mixed tones and could be presented as either cut into half or natural. The splitted cobblestones are mostly extracted from the respective alluvial deposits. These variants are mostly used for cladding or flooring.

As you take a stroll across some of the historic sites or towns of old cities of the world, the walk would reveal romantic & rustic streets with rounded cobblestone paving. Given its rich history, most homeowners and property owners in Australia are also choosing cobblestone as a leading paving material. These can be easily implemented on driveways, pathways, garden areas, and even patio areas for improved aesthetics. Cobblestones are known to date back to the ancient era. There are several pre-Roman streets that are cobbled and date back to the 3rd or 4th centuries. Cobblestones have been utilized immensely across the world –especially in Europe & Latin America. They are still in use and have become a leading paving material for homes or other properties in Australia as well.

Cobblestones have been hailed as one of the first-ever natural stones that were utilized for the construction of walkways, streets, and roads. Towards eliminating dirt and mud from the roads & pathways, cobblestone has been in use for several decades –so much that it is now hailed as a famous historic paving material.

Roads and streets made out of cobblestone paving gradually got replaced with tarmac during the early 1900s. However, in some parts of Europe, you can still come across places or landmarks featuring cobblestone pavements that are currently preserved for their overall natural beauty & significance.

Modern Day Use of Cobblestone
In the modern era, cobblestone pavers are quite famous amongst homeowners and paving contractors, as these serve to be a leading paving material for various projects. Cobblestones are available in blocks of multiple sizes for delivering the overall ease of installation as well as the same design in a short span of time.

In the modern days, cobblestone pavers are derived by getting cut from other subsequent stones –rather than being collected from the beds of rivers or streams. This is because the latter process of the collection turns out quite lengthy. As such, with improved quality and design specifications, cobblestones are quite famous as paving materials for a wide range of projects.
