Tundra Grey: Is it Limestone or Marble? The Industry’s Best-Kept Secret.
If you’ve been browsing for the perfect grey natural stone, you’ve likely seen the same beautiful material labelled as both Tundra Grey Limestone and Tundra Grey Marble.
It depends on who you speak to—and both answers are technically correct depending on whether you are talking to a geologist or a Master Stonemason. At Stone & Slate Discounts, we list it under both categories to help our customers find exactly what they are looking for.
The Science: The Relationship Between Limestone and Marble
To understand the confusion, you have to look at how the earth creates these stones.
Limestone is a sedimentary rock formed over millions of years from calcium carbonate. Marble is what happens when that same limestone is subjected to intense heat and pressure deep underground. It “metamorphoses” (changes) into a denser, harder crystalline structure.
Tundra Grey sits right on the border. It is a highly “metamorphosed” limestone. It has the density and sophisticated veining of a marble, but it retains the earthy, dependable characteristics of a premium limestone.
The “Sandblasted” Difference: Why Finish is Everything
This is the most critical piece of advice 40 years of masonry experience can give you: The finish dictates the location.
Most Tundra Grey found in high-end indoor bathrooms is Honed. A honed finish is smooth and beautiful, but it typically only offers a P2 or P3 slip rating.
The Warning: Never use Honed Tundra Grey outdoors or around a pool. It is far too slippery when wet.
Our Tundra Grey has been Sandblasted. This process involves firing fine grains at the stone to create a micro-textured surface. This elevates the stone to a P4-P5 slip rating, making it the gold standard for outdoor safety. It provides the grip you need for a Melbourne winter while maintaining a soft feel underfoot.
Aesthetic & Format: The “Blue-Grey” Masterpiece
Tundra Grey is famous for its cool, sophisticated palette. It features beautiful light blue and grey hues with delicate white veining that mimics the vast, misty expanses of the tundra.
We stock this versatile stone in two popular formats:
600x400mm: For a clean, modern, architectural line.
French Pattern: A timeless, modular layout that adds character and “old-world” charm to patios and pool surrounds.
The Perfect Pool Finish
To ensure your pool project looks seamless, we provide matching Tundra Grey Pool Coping. You can choose between:
Bullnose: A classic, rounded edge for a soft finish.
Drop-Face (Drop Down): A modern, thick-edged look that hides the glue line and creates a bold “slab” effect over the water’s edge.
The “Direct-to-Quarry” Value
Because we deal directly with the source, we are able to offer this premium architectural stone at warehouse prices.
Current Special: We have moved our Tundra Grey pricing from $109/m² down to only $86/m².
That is a saving of $23 per square metre on a stone that is widely considered one of the most prestigious choices in modern landscape design.
Which look suits your home?
