Q: What is the difference between Premium and Commercial grade travertine?
A: Grading is determined by the density of the stone and the size of its natural voids. Premium Grade features minimal tonal variation, no visible cracks, and very small, tight holes that require less filling. Commercial Grade contains larger structural holes, greater colour variation, and a more rugged, rustic appearance. We DO NOT recommend that you purchase Commercial Grade travertine for ANY project due to their inherent strucyual faults.
Premium grade offers maximum structural integrity for high-traffic zones and would be our recommended choice.
Q: Should I choose Honed & Filled or Tumbled & Unfilled?
A: This depends entirely on the location that you are installing them in:
- Honed & Filled: The stone is cut smooth and its natural pits are filled with a colour-matched resin at the factory. This creates an easy-to-clean, flat surface that is perfect for indoor living rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms.
- Tumbled & Unfilled: The stone is tumbled to give it an aged, textured edge, and the natural holes are left completely open. This maximizes slip resistance, making it the ideal choice for outdoor areas and wet pool decks.
Q: Can travertine handle vehicle traffic on a driveway?
A: Yes, but you must use 30mm thick pavers laid over a reinforced concrete slab or a meticulously compacted road-base subfloor. Additionally, choosing a denser, premium-grade stone ensures it can withstand the weight and torque of vehicles without cracking.
Q: Does travertine stain easily, and how do I clean it?
A: If properly sealed with a quality penetrating sealer, travertine is highly stain-resistant. For daily maintenance, avoid harsh acidic cleaners (like vinegar, bleach, or citrus-based sprays) which can chemically “etch” the stone. Instead, use a pH-neutral cleaner designed specifically for natural stone and water.
